Student Tutor Position Description Cincinnati State Technical and Community College Tutoring Center (TC) Tutoring Center Student Tutor Job Description: Purpose : The purpose of tutoring is to tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning. Student tutors will provide individual and/or small group tutoring in subjects in which the tutor has attained a grade of B or higher. Tutors will participate in face-to-face and online training to learn how to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student's potential for academic progress.
As a member of the Tutoring Center's team, tutors must maintain ongoing communication with the Director of the Tutoring Center. All correspondence pertaining to scheduling or changing an appointment time, etc., must be sent via e-mail, and always carbon to the Director.
Responsibilities: - Tutor students in specific course material and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning. This can be done in a one-on-one session or small-group session (no more than three to four students for the same subject).
- Once you become a student tutor, it will be important to check your email at least once a day, this includes the weekends.
- Attend all workshops and/or seminars offered by the Tutoring Center Director.
- Have students sign-in and sign-out at the computer kiosk located on the floor next to Ms. Greenlee's office. Please do not sign in for your students.
- Arrive on time for each tutoring appointment and if an emergency arises, please try to secure a replacement for that hour or that day by contacting another student tutor who tutors the same subject. If you do not know who is tutoring your same subjects(s), simply send an e-mail to Ms. Greenlee.
- Tutors must refrain from the following:
- Tutors are not teachers
- Tutors are not counselors
- Tutors are not academic advisors
- Tutors are not financial aid representatives, etc.
Therefore, at no time is it the tutor's responsibility to assume any of these roles. A tutor's job is to tutor and bring to the Director's attention any communication outside the scope of his or her tutoring role.
Position Requirements: - Prior to becoming a student tutor, you must be currently enrolled as a Cincinnati State student and have completed one full semester.
- Demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students.
- Complete the course(s) in which he/she wishes to tutor earning a B or better. A grade of A is preferred.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- Exhibit excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
- Always exhibit appropriate and professional behavior.
Minimum Qualifications: The hiring of student workers by Cincinnati State is premised on eligibility guidelines for federal work study employment: eligible applicants must be high school graduates or have attained a GED. Additionally, eligible applicants for work study positions at Cincinnati State must be at least 16 years of age on or before the date of hire. Eligible students must:
- Have completed a FAFSA for the current school year.
- Meet and continue to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Be an active student at Cincinnati State.
Hourly Pay: $14.00 per hour
Work Hours: Part-Time, up to 20 hours per week
Office Hours are between Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students may not work during their scheduled class times or holidays.
